Indonesia to Renovate 5,000 East Nusa Tenggara Homes

Indonesia plans to renovate up to 5,000 homes in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) this year, a substantial increase from the 436 units initially targeted for 2025. This ambitious program aims to elevate living standards for low-income communities across the eastern province, signaling intensified central government support for housing initiatives.

Governor Melki Laka Lena announced the expansion in Kupang on Friday, noting that this marks a significant stride toward providing decent housing access for those in need. The initiative follows productive discussions between Governor Lena and Housing and Settlements Minister Maruarar Sirait in Jakarta on Thursday. The renovation efforts will encompass Kupang City and the 21 districts throughout NTT.

A key component of this project is its support from the People’s Business Credit (KUR) scheme for housing, a policy recently introduced by President Prabowo Subianto. Under this scheme, the government will provide a five percent interest subsidy on housing loans, offering repayment periods of up to 30 years. The program specifically targets expanding home ownership for diverse low-income groups, including junior civil servants, military personnel, police officers, teachers, fishermen, farmers, and small business owners.

In addition to directly upgrading homes, the government plans to improve slum areas and foster local economic growth. These economic support programs will be facilitated through financing managed by PT Permodalan Nasional Madani, a state-owned microfinance firm. This comprehensive strategy, according to Governor Lena, integrates physical housing improvements with economic empowerment to ensure sustainable advancements in living standards.

Governor Lena expressed gratitude to the central government for prioritizing NTT in its housing agenda, asserting that these initiatives instill new hope for better living conditions for the province’s communities. Officials anticipate that the program will effectively reduce housing deficits and enhance access to secure and adequate shelter, while also stimulating local economies through construction and related sectors. Minister Sirait is expected to visit NTT soon to review the coordination among central and local authorities.
