Job Seeking Fuels Post-Eid Migration to Jakarta

Must read

Jakarta has identified job seeking as the primary driver for a significant portion of its new arrivals following last year’s Eid holiday, according to data from the city’s Population and Civil Registry Office (Dukcapil). Approximately 34.97 percent of individuals migrating to the capital cited employment opportunities as their main reason for relocation.

This trend is reinforced by the high representation of newcomers within the productive age demographic, noted Denny Wahyu Haryanto, Head of Jakarta Dukcapil. He stated that the desire to secure employment is a strong motivator for those choosing to move to Jakarta.

Beyond job searches, other notable reasons for migration included family considerations, accounting for 32.58 percent, and job transfers, at 15.59 percent. Housing was a factor for 13.04 percent of new residents, while education stood at 3.49 percent. Health and security represented smaller proportions, at 0.29 percent and 0.03 percent respectively.

Demographically, a large majority of newcomers, specifically 77.84 percent, fall within the productive age bracket of 15 to 64 years. The gender distribution among new arrivals showed 97 men for every 100 women. Educational attainment figures indicate that 78.71 percent possess a senior high school education or lower.

Furthermore, data suggests that 58.96 percent of these new residents are estimated to have lower incomes, frequently relying on skills within the informal economic sector. Mr. Haryanto highlighted that easy access to essential public services, such as transportation, healthcare, and education, contributes significantly to Jakarta’s appeal as a destination for migrants.

The relative simplicity of accessing population administration, health, and education services helps maintain Jakarta’s magnetic pull, he explained. Regarding living conditions, it was observed that about 21.05 percent of newcomers reside in densely populated or slum areas, including neighborhoods bordering the city.

This comprehensive data can serve as a foundational resource for developing initiatives related to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and for strategies aimed at supporting the transition of informal sector workers into more formalized roles through guidance and support programs.
