Jakarta – Indonesia’s National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) has initiated a partnership with China’s Macau Judiciary Police (MJP) aimed at enhancing capabilities in protecting citizens from terror threats. The collaboration began with an inaugural meeting held in Bogor, West Java, on Wednesday, April 1.

Brig. Gen. Dhani Hernando, BNPT’s Director of Bilateral Cooperation, stated that this initial gathering established a strategic basis for fostering trust, deepening institutional understanding, and developing sustained coordination between the two agencies. He also noted that discussions focused on exchanging best practices in public security and counterterrorism, particularly concerning the safety of approximately 8,000 Indonesian nationals residing and working in Macau.

Leading the Macau delegation, Deputy Director Lai Man Vai expressed gratitude to Indonesia for hosting the event. He acknowledged that despite cultural and demographic differences, both entities share a common objective of ensuring public safety and voiced optimism that the engagement would lead to stronger security cooperation.

Beyond specific protection measures, the talks also encompassed wider collaboration on preventing radicalization and violent extremism. Officials explored potential avenues for capacity-building and training initiatives designed to bolster institutional capabilities. Such joint efforts are expected to improve early detection and prevention of potential security threats.

The BNPT utilized the meeting to share Indonesia’s extensive experience in counterterrorism operations and policy formulation. The agency underscored its comprehensive approach, which balances robust enforcement with proactive preventive strategies.

As part of their visit, the Macau delegation was taken to a correctional facility in Sentul. This provided an opportunity to observe Indonesia’s deradicalization programs firsthand, which the BNPT described as central to its commitment to rehabilitating individuals involved in extremist activities and preparing them for reintegration into society.
