Indonesia’s Religious Affairs Minister, Nasaruddin Umar, extended Easter greetings to Christians across the nation for 2026, urging them to pray for peace, harmony, and national unity. Speaking from Jakarta, Minister Umar underscored that Easter is not solely a religious observance but also a significant moment to strengthen spiritual values within society.
The minister, who also serves as the Grand Imam of Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque, encouraged Christians to leverage the occasion to reinforce solidarity and maintain social harmony among all communities. He called upon them to dedicate their prayers to the people and the nation, hoping Indonesia remains peaceful, calm, and cohesive, and that the celebration brings blessings to the country.
Minister Umar further emphasized the importance of all societal groups continuing to uphold unity in diversity to sustain a peaceful and cohesive environment. He noted that the 40-day Lent period, which culminates in Easter festivities and includes observances such as Palm Sunday and the Holy Triduum (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday), should fortify faith, hope, and love among Christians. These values, he added, are vital for fostering resilience and compassion within society.
Earlier, during a Good Friday service on April 3, Father Yohanes Deodatus of Jakarta Cathedral addressed young people, advising them to remain steadfast in their faith. He urged the youth to build resilience amidst global challenges and to cultivate humility in their lives, stressing the importance of having clear direction while avoiding arrogance.
Father Deodatus acknowledged the difficult and challenging times confronting the nation, including various global pressures. He encouraged congregants to draw closer to God and to remain faithful despite hardships, affirming that God is always present and never abandons people, even in their weaknesses.
