The Indonesian government has announced plans for a significant expansion of its public housing renovation program in 2026, targeting the improvement of 400,000 housing units nationwide. Minister of Housing and Settlements, Maruarar Sirait, conveyed the details from the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Monday.
This ambitious increase in target units follows a directive from President Prabowo Subianto, aimed at accelerating the provision of decent housing across the country. Minister Sirait highlighted that the 2026 goal marks a substantial rise from the 45,000 units targeted in the previous year. The expansion is being prepared collaboratively with the Minister of Finance, the Minister of State Secretary, and the Cabinet Secretary.
The program is also set to achieve full national coverage. While 220 districts and cities were not included in the previous year’s scope, the 2026 plan aims for implementation across all regions, broadening access to improved living conditions.
Beyond directly providing adequate shelter, the housing renovation initiative is intended to stimulate regional economies and promote economic equality. Sirait underscored that the program will serve as a significant driver for economic growth and fairness throughout Indonesia.
In a related initiative, President Prabowo has also instructed the government to utilize state-owned land in urban areas, particularly assets belonging to State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) in the railway sector, for the development of new public housing complexes.
Minister Sirait confirmed that he has inspected several potential sites, including an area in Tanah Abang, Jakarta. These plots are designated for vertical, mixed-use housing developments, designed to accommodate low- and middle-income communities and foster inclusive residential areas. Preparations for similar developments in Bandung, in cooperation with the President Director of the state-owned railway operator PT KAI, are expected to commence by the end of the current month.
