Bapanas Warns of Eid al-Adha Food Price Volatility

The National Food Agency (Bapanas) has initiated proactive strategies to manage potential fluctuations in food prices leading up to Eid al-Adha. These measures focus on strengthening supply chains, enhancing distribution networks, and intensifying price monitoring across Indonesia.

According to I Gusti Ketut Astawa, Deputy for Food Availability and Stabilization at Bapanas, these early interventions are designed to pre-empt price pressures. The agency aims to build on the success achieved in controlling inflation during the recent Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr periods, anticipating increased consumer demand in May due to Eid al-Adha.

A particular emphasis is placed on maintaining the stability of prices for sacrificial meat. These efforts involve robust cross-sector collaboration, including the Food Task Force, which monitors for violations related to pricing, food safety, and quality standards. Monitoring activities were conducted at approximately 74,000 locations between February 5 and April 4, 2026, with support from national police and regional authorities.

These initiatives have contributed to a decline in food inflation, both on a monthly and annual basis. Volatile food inflation in March 2026 registered at 1.58 percent month-to-month, a reduction from 2.50 percent in the preceding month. Annually, food inflation also decreased to 4.24 percent from 4.64 percent.

Furthermore, the government is reinforcing its Government Food Reserves (CPP). As of April 6, rice stocks within the CPP reached 4.4 million tons, marking the highest recorded government rice reserve. Other key commodity stocks include 168,000 tons of feed corn, 120,000 kiloliters of cooking oil, 49,000 tons of sugar, 8,000 tons of beef, 3,000 tons of buffalo meat, 39 tons of chicken meat, and 17 tons of eggs.

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) has also indicated that inflationary pressures during the Ramadan and Eid period this year were notably more subdued compared to historical trends, where this period often sees significant price increases.
