President Prabowo Subianto recently issued a warning regarding the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, emphasizing the serious attention required to address its potential for generating fake content. He highlighted that AI can manipulate voices and images, making individuals appear to say or do things they never did.
Speaking during a Government Working Meeting with the Red and White Cabinet at the Presidential Palace Complex on Wednesday, the President shared personal examples of such AI-generated content. He mentioned encountering videos of himself singing with a polished voice, despite admitting he cannot sing, and delivering speeches in Mandarin and Arabic, languages he does not speak.
While acknowledging that some AI-generated content might initially be perceived as having potential advantages, President Prabowo stressed that the broader implications of the technology cannot be ignored. He warned that the widespread dissemination of hoaxes and slander through social media, facilitated by digital technology, poses a significant risk to a country’s stability.
The President drew a parallel between modern digital manipulation and traditional warfare, stating that it is no longer necessary to deploy troops or bombs to undermine a nation. Instead, he suggested, social media campaigns, defamation, and misinformation could be equally potent.
He further explained that technological advancements in AI and digital information systems allow a single individual to manage a large number of online accounts with relatively inexpensive equipment. This capability can create an “echo chamber” effect, amplifying an issue to appear massive and widespread, even if its origin is small. President Prabowo noted that this phenomenon is a subject of intelligence studies, demonstrating how its impact can potentially undermine a country.
