The ministry characterized these operations as a serious infringement of international law, including humanitarian statutes. It further emphasized the necessity for accountability concerning actions that harm non-combatants and critical public services.
Indonesia urged an immediate cessation of violence and military aggression by Israel in Lebanon, underscoring the imperative to safeguard civilians and civilian infrastructure in line with global legal frameworks. Jakarta also called upon all parties involved to exercise prudence, pursue de-escalation through dialogue, and avoid steps that could exacerbate the already precarious security situation in the region.
The condemnation followed reports of extensive airstrikes targeting Beirut on Wednesday. These attacks signify a marked escalation in hostilities between Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah. Regional media and security sources described the strikes as the most significant wave of attacks since a previous intensification of the conflict on March 2, pointing to a severe deterioration of security across Lebanon.
Preliminary figures from local authorities and emergency services indicated that at least 254 individuals were killed in the attacks, with 92 fatalities recorded in Beirut.
This escalation occurred shortly after the United States and Iran announced a two-week ceasefire agreement on Tuesday, intended to ease broader regional tensions. Iran stated the agreement included a halt to attacks on Lebanon, presenting it as part of a wider initiative to stabilize conflict zones involving its regional allies. However, the United States contradicted this, with President Donald Trump asserting that the deal did not extend to the conflict in Lebanon, which he described as a distinct issue requiring a separate approach.
