The BRICS group of emerging economies concluded its 15th annual summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, in August 2023. The gathering united leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, who convened to deliberate on global economic cooperation, geopolitical developments, and the future direction of the bloc. A pivotal decision made during the summit was the invitation extended to six new nations for full membership.

Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates are set to join the alliance, marking the first expansion of BRICS since South Africa’s inclusion in 2010. This strategic enlargement is anticipated to significantly augment the group’s collective economic weight and geopolitical leverage on the international stage, potentially reshaping global economic power dynamics.

Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo attended the summit as a special guest, participating in discussions alongside leaders from various nations. Prior to and during the event, there was considerable international interest regarding Indonesia’s potential application for BRICS membership, given its substantial economy and its prominent role in Southeast Asia.

However, President Widodo conveyed that Indonesia was undertaking a comprehensive review of the implications, advantages, and disadvantages of joining the BRICS bloc. He underscored the importance of a meticulous evaluation to ensure any decision fully aligns with Indonesia’s national interests and adheres to its principle of an independent and active foreign policy. The President indicated that a definitive decision on membership would not be rushed.

The summit’s agenda also included extensive discussions on fostering stronger trade relations among member countries, exploring mechanisms for increased transactions in local currencies, and advocating for reforms within existing global financial and governance institutions. The expansion underscores a broader trend among developing nations to seek enhanced collaboration and exert a more collective influence in the evolving global landscape. The newly invited members are expected to formally join BRICS in early 2024.
