Lindsey Vonn, the highly decorated alpine skier, is currently recovering from a severe crash that posed a significant threat to her leg. Despite her ongoing recovery, Vonn has indicated she is not ruling out a potential return to the Olympic stage in 2030, when she would be 45 years old.
The Olympic gold medalist stated she would consider competing in the 2030 Winter Olympics if she felt capable of being competitive. She noted that while such a comeback is not unprecedented, she would only pursue it if she could achieve high speeds. Vonn acknowledged that 2030 is still distant and the prospect of competing at 45 might be challenging, but she remains open to the possibility.
Vonn sustained the crash during her initial downhill run at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in February. She is still using crutches but anticipates being able to walk unassisted by the end of April. Further medical procedures are planned for later this year, including the removal of metal from her leg, which was inserted during five previous surgeries over the past two months, and the repair of an ACL she tore in January, just nine days before her Olympic run.
At 41 years old during the Milano Cortina games, Vonn had been the top-ranked downhill skier entering the competition, following a return from a five-year retirement. A victory there would have made her the oldest female downhill gold medalist. However, her run ended abruptly after just 13 seconds. The prospect of competing in 2030 would place her among the oldest Olympic skiers in history, with Sarah Schleper, 46, having finished 26th in the women’s Olympic Super-G for Mexico in February of this year.
Vonn expressed her desire not to conclude her illustrious career with a crash, stating she must observe how her body responds to recovery and training before making any definitive decisions about future competitions.
