Bappenas: $100 Oil Price to Cut Growth 0.1%

Must read

Indonesia’s National Development Planning Ministry (Bappenas) projects a potential 0.1 percent slowdown in the nation’s economic growth if global oil prices sustain at US$100 per barrel until June. This assessment comes as international benchmarks, including Brent crude and US West Texas Intermediate (WTI), currently exceed US$100 per barrel, a significant increase from January’s average of US$64 per barrel for Brent crude.

Ibnu Yahya, Bappenas’ director of macroeconomic planning, stated on Tuesday that the national economy’s vulnerability to energy price surges is now considerably less pronounced compared to previous crisis periods. He attributed this improved resilience to Indonesia’s enhanced adaptability and flexibility in responding to global economic shocks.

Yahya highlighted the gradual and continuous strengthening of economic fundamentals since the 1998 Asian financial crisis as a key factor in the country’s stability. For instance, during the 2008 global financial crisis, Indonesia’s economic growth saw a relatively modest decline from 6.1 percent to approximately 4.9 percent, even as the global economy faced severe pressure.

The economy also demonstrated strong endurance in 2022 amid a surge in energy prices and heightened global geopolitical tensions, maintaining growth above 5 percent.

Despite this resilience, the government acknowledges several ongoing challenges to national economic strengthening. These include issues within the real sector, fiscal policy management, bank credit availability, and attracting foreign direct investment.

To tackle these hurdles, the government is prioritizing efforts such as industrialization and the transformation of the workforce from the informal to the formal sector. These initiatives are aimed at expanding and fortifying the middle class. Yahya emphasized that these strategic endeavors are part of medium- to long-term projects and cannot be fully realized within the current year.
