Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Akhmad Wiyagus has called for a strong commitment from regional governments to accelerate tuberculosis (TB) elimination. Speaking at a press conference for World Tuberculosis Day 2026 at the Ministry of Health office in Jakarta on Monday, Wiyagus emphasized that these efforts are vital for community protection and to support national development goals.

He underscored that the success of TB elimination hinges significantly on regional leadership, particularly through integrating TB control policies into local planning and budgeting. Wiyagus highlighted that TB is not merely a health issue but also affects public productivity, poverty levels, and the quality of human resources, posing a potential obstacle to national development.

The Indonesian government’s dedication to addressing TB is affirmed by Presidential Regulation Number 67 of 2021. This regulation provides a foundational framework for regional governments to take decisive actions in safeguarding their communities from the threat of TB.

Wiyagus urged for the acceleration of TB control measures at the regional level through measurable and sustainable policies. Such efforts encompass strengthening planning, increasing budget allocations, and empowering local officials down to the village level. These comprehensive approaches are expected to enhance the effectiveness of TB control, from case detection and treatment to integrated prevention.

With Indonesia ranking second globally in terms of TB cases, the deputy minister stressed the critical need for more extensive and coordinated acceleration efforts, including through cross-sector collaboration. The national target is to eliminate TB by 2030, in line with Presidential Regulation Number 67 of 2021.

To further advance TB elimination, the Ministry of Health has initiated several strategic actions. These include intensifying promotion and prevention initiatives, as well as integrating data from hospitals and community health centers across the country.
