Jakarta – Indonesia’s Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, has provided assurances regarding the stability of the nation’s fish stocks. This statement comes amid prevailing global geopolitical tensions that have significantly disrupted international food prices and complex distribution networks. Addressing Commission IV of the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Tuesday, Minister Trenggono reiterated the government’s firm commitment to consistently meet the domestic demand for animal protein, with a particular focus on contributions from the robust fisheries sector.
According to detailed projections released by the ministry, Indonesia is expected to achieve a substantial national fish production of 10.57 million tons between April and December 2026. This comprehensive figure is composed of an estimated 5.42 million tons derived from traditional capture fisheries and a further 5.15 million tons from advanced aquaculture practices. These projections highlight the dual strategy employed to ensure a steady supply.
The minister emphasized the government’s proactive approach, which involves continuous oversight of key fishery commodities across eight major consumption centers nationwide. This rigorous monitoring system is specifically designed to guarantee both the ready availability and the smooth, unimpeded distribution of fish products to consumers throughout the archipelago.
Based on the latest findings from these monitoring efforts, Minister Trenggono confirmed that the current availability of fish resources is well within a secure and manageable category, a status anticipated to persist until at least June 2026. He further articulated that fortifying food security within the vital marine and fisheries sector necessitates broad-based collaboration. This cooperation must extend across all relevant stakeholders, including active participation from lawmakers, to ensure that implementing sustainable practices remains a core priority and is effectively maintained over time.
