Indonesia Calls for UN Security Council Session After Peacekeeper Attacks

Must read

Indonesia has formally requested an extraordinary meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to address recent attacks targeting UN peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon. This initiative underscores Jakarta’s firm commitment to ensuring the safety and security of international personnel serving in conflict zones.

Foreign Minister Sugiono confirmed on Saturday in Tangerang, Banten, that the appeal was lodged through the nation’s permanent mission in New York. This decisive action was taken swiftly, just one day after an incident tragically resulted in the deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers. These personnel were serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), a mission tasked with maintaining peace and stability in the region.

France, which holds the designated “penholder” responsibility for Lebanon-related issues within the Security Council, has reportedly agreed to Indonesia’s call for an urgent session. This agreement paves the way for the international body to collectively deliberate on the escalating challenges and risks confronting peacekeeping forces operating under the UN mandate.

During the proposed meeting, Indonesia’s primary objective is to issue a strong condemnation of all assaults on UN peacekeeping personnel and their facilities. The government also intends to demand a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incidents. This inquiry aims to ascertain the precise causes of the attacks and to identify and hold accountable those responsible for the violence.

Furthermore, Indonesia plans to unequivocally emphasize the critical importance of ensuring the security and protection of all international personnel deployed in peacekeeping missions globally. The nation views the safety of these peacekeepers as paramount, advocating for robust measures to prevent future attacks and uphold the principles of international peace and security.
