Indonesia is actively seeking support from African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) nations for its bid to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2029–2030 term. This diplomatic initiative is being spearheaded by Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir.

The Deputy Foreign Minister engaged in a series of discussions with representatives from the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS). These meetings took place on the sidelines of the OACPS Summit, which was held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, from March 27 to 29.

During the summit, Mr. Nasir held separate talks with the presidents of Sudan and Gabon, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and garnering their backing for Indonesia’s candidacy. He also met with the foreign ministers of Botswana, Seychelles, Sao Tome and Principe, and Equatorial Guinea to discuss similar objectives.

A key message conveyed by Mr. Nasir was the importance of fostering greater cooperation and solidarity among African, Pacific, and Caribbean countries, particularly in light of current geopolitical uncertainties. He also emphasized Indonesia’s interest in collaborating on areas such as digital sovereignty, technological resilience, the blue economy, and climate resilience.

This outreach forms part of a broader campaign by Indonesia to build international support ahead of the upcoming election. The country’s Foreign Minister formally announced the candidacy on January 14 during the ministry’s annual press statement, indicating that direct engagement with partner nations would commence immediately.

Indonesia has previously served four terms as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, specifically in 1973–1974, 1995–1996, 2007–2008, and 2019–2021. The nation also held the rotating presidency of the council in August 2020.
