Indonesia has extended an invitation to Uzbekistan for collaborative film production focusing on historical and cultural themes. The initiative aims to enhance bilateral cultural diplomacy and strengthen cooperation within the creative industries.

Culture Minister Fadli Zon affirmed Indonesia’s strong support for such partnerships, particularly in the realm of historical and cultural cinema. Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting, he highlighted the rapid growth of Indonesia’s film industry, which attracts 87 million viewers and holds a 67 percent market share.

The Minister emphasized that film serves as a vital tool for cultural diplomacy between the two nations, fostering mutual understanding through shared narratives. Several other initiatives are also underway to bolster cultural ties, including residency programs for artists, students, and cultural researchers from both countries.

Minister Zon underscored the importance of promoting Indonesian culture through various avenues, such as festivals, religious music, and historical tourism, to encourage broader engagement. He expressed hope that Indonesia and Uzbekistan would integrate culture, history, and tourism into their diplomatic agenda to further advance collaboration.

He suggested exploring historical tourism sites in Uzbekistan beyond the Imam Bukhari tomb complex, such as the tombs of Imam Tirmidhi and the Bahauddin Naqshbandi complex, which could attract Indonesian pilgrims.

The remarks were made during Minister Zon’s meeting with Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Oybek Eshonov, and Samarkand Governor Adiz Boboev. During the discussion, Minister Zon commended Uzbekistan’s efforts in revitalizing the Imam Bukhari tomb and mosque complex in Samarkand. He noted that the site holds significant historical importance in Indonesia–Uzbekistan relations, reflecting early cultural diplomacy, with its revitalization initially requested by Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno.

Governor Boboev welcomed Indonesia’s support for ongoing cultural initiatives, reaffirming Samarkand’s commitment to deepening cooperation. Both parties signaled their readiness to expand collaboration across various creative sectors, viewing film as a strategic starting point for broader cultural exchange. This collaboration is expected to boost tourism, deepen people-to-people connections, and strengthen bilateral relations through shared cultural heritage.
