The Indonesian Army (TNI AD) is planning to establish a new military region command, known as Kodam, in Central Papua Province. This strategic move aims to streamline the chain of command and enhance operational effectiveness within the region.
Major General Febriel Buyung Sikumbang, Commander of the XVII/Cenderawasih Military Region Command, stated on Friday in Jayapura that the primary objective for forming the new Kodam is to shorten the command structure. This, he explained, is crucial for improving responsiveness, particularly in addressing various security threats.
Currently, the Cenderawasih Kodam oversees security and stability across a vast territory encompassing three provinces: Papua, Central Papua, and Highland Papua. General Sikumbang indicated that establishing a dedicated command for Central Papua is considered a strategic step toward achieving greater efficiency in military operations.
For the immediate future, the Cenderawasih Kodam will continue to manage security affairs in Central Papua. This will involve ongoing collaboration with other military units already operating within the province.
The commander also expressed hope for active public participation in maintaining security, emphasizing that community involvement is vital for ensuring the smooth progress of development initiatives. He highlighted the Indonesian Army’s existing commitment to improving local welfare through a range of efforts. These include the construction of essential infrastructure, such as bridges and roads, as well as programs focused on developing local cooperatives to support economic growth in the region.
