Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received South Korea’s highest state honor, the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, from President Lee Jae-myung during his visit to Seoul on March 31. The accolade was presented following President Prabowo’s state visit to Japan.
The two leaders elevated their bilateral relationship to a “Special Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” a new designation for both nations. This upgrade signifies a deepening of trust and cooperation, particularly amidst global geopolitical shifts and supply chain restructuring. The partnership aims to enhance collaboration across strategic, security, and economic fronts.
A central theme of the summit was expanding cooperation in defense and energy. The co-development program for the KF-21 next-generation fighter jet is progressing into its next phase, which will now include participation in Indonesian production. This initiative is viewed as a blueprint for future defense collaborations, potentially extending to naval vessels and air defense systems.
In the energy sector, discussions focused on Indonesia’s role as a key supplier of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and a strategic partner in regional energy transition efforts. The emphasis was placed on reducing vulnerability to disruptions in Middle Eastern energy supplies.
Beyond traditional industrial collaboration, both presidents declared a “Global AI Society Solidarity Initiative.” This strategic undertaking seeks to formalize cooperation on artificial intelligence in critical areas such as healthcare, education, and food security. Indonesia is positioned as a co-architect in developing a human-centered model for AI governance, with potential for broader regional application.
The reinforced partnership builds upon 53 years of diplomatic relations since 1973, and economic ties dating back to 1968. Both nations reaffirmed their roles as reliable middle-power partners, contributing to stability and shared prosperity in their respective regions.
