Lawmaker Pushes Electrification for Energy Independence

Jakarta – A senior parliamentary figure has called for an expedited transition to electric vehicles and the widespread adoption of electric stoves to bolster Indonesia’s energy independence. Sugeng Suparwoto, Deputy Chairman of House of Representatives Commission XII, underscored the necessity of reinforcing national energy self-sufficiency by utilizing domestic resources, primarily electricity, particularly in light of global supply and price uncertainties stemming from Middle East tensions.

In a statement released on Friday, Mr. Suparwoto emphasized that current global circumstances serve as a reminder for Indonesia to strengthen its energy system. He characterized vehicle electrification as a strategic measure to redirect the transportation sector’s energy consumption from fossil fuels to electricity, which largely originates from domestic sources.

The push for energy transition is set against a backdrop of escalating state energy subsidies. These subsidies significantly increased from Rp95.7 trillion in 2020 to Rp159.6 trillion in 2023, and are projected to reach Rp203.4 trillion in 2024. The total allocation for energy subsidies stood at Rp394.3 trillion in 2025, with a substantial portion continuously designated for fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The draft state budget for 2026 estimates these subsidies at Rp210.06 trillion, approximately US$12.3 billion.

Beyond the transportation sector, Mr. Suparwoto also encouraged households to switch from gas-powered cooking appliances to electric stoves. He highlighted electric stoves as a more efficient alternative that leverages the nation’s readily available electricity infrastructure.

He affirmed that both initiatives would contribute to a clean energy transition and help mitigate risks associated with global instability. According to Mr. Suparwoto, an increase in domestic electricity consumption would fortify the national energy system against external pressures. He further noted that effective implementation of these electrification policies requires robust regulatory support to ensure they do not unduly burden the public, thereby securing a gradual energy transition and enhanced national energy security.
