Indonesia is exploring initiatives to convert state-owned heritage buildings into dynamic cultural and educational venues, including museums. This strategic effort aims to optimize the utilization of historic assets and further promote the nation’s cultural identity.
Culture Minister Fadli Zon confirmed that discussions are underway with Danantara, the national sovereign wealth fund, regarding the repurposing of cultural heritage sites currently owned by various state enterprises. He underscored the importance of transforming underutilized historic properties into productive public spaces.
As a potential project, Minister Zon specifically highlighted a historic building owned by state traffic insurer Jasa Raharja, situated in Jakarta’s Old Town district. He proposed converting this location into a dedicated museum for photography and film, noting a current shortage of such facilities despite the existence of numerous valuable collections. The primary challenge, he explained, is the lack of adequate exhibition space.
The minister emphasized film as a crucial medium for cultural promotion, given its inherent ability to integrate elements of theater, dance, music, language, and culinary arts. He suggested that the Jasa Raharja building’s strategic location would attract visitors, thereby showcasing Indonesia’s creative capabilities.
Mr. Zon reiterated the ministry’s commitment to fostering collaboration with government agencies, state-owned entities, private sector organizations, and local communities to safeguard and promote cultural heritage. He indicated that partnerships, particularly with Danantara, are vital to ensure these sites are managed effectively and deliver broader public advantages.
Muhammad Awaluddin, President Director of Jasa Raharja, welcomed the proposal. He affirmed that historic assets should not only be preserved but also serve productive functions, considering the building as part of the national heritage that requires protection and beneficial use.
He anticipated that this collaborative project could establish a significant cultural hub, offering educational and cultural experiences that would benefit the public. This initiative is also expected to contribute to the promotion of tourism within Jakarta’s Old Town area.
