YouTube’s TV Growth Fuels Interactive Video Push

Must read

YouTube is increasing its focus on enhancing interactive experiences for viewers using television screens, a strategy highlighted by recent job advertisements. The platform, owned by Google, aims to deepen engagement across various formats, including live streaming and short-form videos, as more users turn to larger displays.

These job postings detail plans for features such as live chat, gifting options, and multi-device controls for live content. Efforts also include making short-form videos more community-driven on large screens and developing shared live experiences that connect creators and audiences in real time. Roles also mention collaboration with connected TV and streaming device partners to expand distribution and work on products like YouTube Primetime Channels.

This strategic shift comes as connected televisions constitute a significant and growing portion of YouTube’s overall watch time. In the U.S., watch time on connected TVs is projected to reach over 44% by 2026, an increase from approximately 41% in 2022. The platform currently accounts for 12.5% of all TV viewing.

Recruitment efforts span the United States and India, with specific plans to expand a YouTube Live engineering center in Bengaluru dedicated to modernizing live streaming for home entertainment systems.

This initiative aligns with other recent developments, including the introduction of AI-powered voice search for TVs, a “TV Companion” feature designed for mobile interaction with content on TV, and “Stations” offering continuous linear streams. The platform also partnered with FIFA last month for an immersive viewing experience for the 2026 World Cup.

Historically, however, viewer engagement on television screens has typically been lower compared to interactions on mobile devices and desktop computers. Interactive features on large screens have largely remained niche.

The platform holds a unique market position, bridging social media and traditional streaming services, which could facilitate its efforts in developing new interactive formats for television.
