Indonesia’s state-owned defense company, PT Pindad, and the government have initiated efforts to decentralize waste management, aiming to address the persistent waste crisis at the Bantargebang Landfill in Bekasi, West Java. This strategic plan incorporates the use of various smokeless technologies.
Discussions concerning this initiative took place during a limited meeting held last week. Attendees included Brian Yuliarto, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology; Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, Minister of Environment; and Sigit P Santosa, President Director of PT Pindad.
PT Pindad has developed multiple waste management solutions, encompassing Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC), autothermix, and plasma technology. A key innovation highlighted is the Stungta Pindad, described as a mobile smokeless incinerator.
According to Santosa, the President has directed the implementation of waste decentralization to tackle waste issues at the village level. Initial pilot projects are planned for Jakarta and Bandung, with a subsequent rollout to other regions across the country.
Minister Yuliarto underscored that resolving the Bantargebang Landfill crisis necessitates integrated upstream-to-downstream management, supported by effective governance and land provision. He emphasized the importance of stopping the influx of new waste upstream, while simultaneously accelerating the reduction of existing waste piles and focusing on reforestation downstream.
Minister Nurofiq further outlined a target to transform current waste treatment sites into advanced processing units. He expressed confidence that fully implemented decentralization, utilizing diverse waste processing technologies, can resolve waste challenges locally without relying on large landfills.
