Commander of the Indonesian Military (TNI) Peacekeeping Mission Center (PMPP), Major General Iwan Bambang Setiawan, reaffirmed Indonesia’s dedication to safeguarding its personnel serving as United Nations (UN) peacekeepers. His statement underscored the nation’s resolve to protect its troops and actively contribute to global stability through the deployment of its Garuda Contingent forces.
This commitment was highlighted during Major General Setiawan’s visit on Saturday, April 4, to Indonesian peacekeepers undergoing treatment at St. George Hospital in Beirut, Lebanon. Three injured personnel from the TNI Mechanized Battalion Task Force Konga XXIII-S, deployed with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), were met: First Lieutenant Sulthan Wirdean Maulana, Private First Class Rico Pramudia, and Private First Class Deni Rianto. The commander offered moral support and prayers for their swift recovery, emphasizing the state’s ongoing attention to soldiers in mission areas.
The visited soldiers are among several Indonesian peacekeepers recently impacted by security incidents. Two other members of the task force, Private First Class Bayu Prakoso and Private First Class Arif Kurniawan, also sustained injuries during their UNIFIL service last week.
These incidents follow the recent deaths of three Indonesian military personnel in Lebanon. Private First Class Farizal Rhomadhon died on March 29 after being struck by artillery fire. The following day, March 30, Captain Zulmi Aditya Iskandar and First Sergeant Muhammad Nur Ikhwan were killed when a convoy they were escorting came under attack.
In response to these attacks targeting UNIFIL personnel, the Indonesian government has issued a strong condemnation. Jakarta has called for a comprehensive investigation into the incidents and urged the United Nations Security Council to convene an extraordinary meeting to address the situation.
