Jakarta – The Indonesian government has committed to providing full compensation and support to the families of three soldiers who died while serving in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon. General Maruli Simanjuntak, Chief of the Indonesian Army Staff, affirmed on Sunday that the state would offer comprehensive assistance and ensure the families remain part of the military’s extended community.
General Simanjuntak expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting that the sacrifice of the soldiers in the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission underscores the inherent risks and profound dedication required for assignments that serve the nation and humanity.
He reiterated that despite the tragic event, the incident would not diminish Indonesia’s unwavering commitment to global peace operations. General Simanjuntak urged all military personnel to emulate the spirit, dedication, and bravery displayed by the fallen soldiers.
A solemn release ceremony for the three peacekeepers took place on Saturday, April 4, at the VIP Apron of Terminal 3, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, presided over by General Simanjuntak.
The bodies arrived in Jakarta at 5:00 p.m. local time on a flight from Turkey. President Prabowo Subianto attended the ceremony to pay his final respects before the remains were transported to their respective hometowns for military burials.
The ceremony began with the formal handover of the bodies from their unit to the state, received by General Simanjuntak. The deceased soldiers were identified as Major (Posthumous) Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, Chief Sergeant (Posthumous) Muhammad Nur Ichwan, and Corporal Second Class (Posthumous) Farizal Rhomadhon.
Major Iskandar was interred at Cikutra Heroes’ Cemetery in Bandung, while Chief Sergeant Ichwan was laid to rest at Giri Dharmoloyo II Cemetery in Magelang. Corporal Rhomadhon’s burial took place at Giripeni Cemetery in Kulonprogo. General Simanjuntak concluded the event by stating that the nation had lost three of its finest soldiers, whose dedication and sacrifice in peacekeeping duties would forever be remembered.
