Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung Islands – The Cheng Beng Tradition, an annual grave-cleaning ritual, was observed in Pangkalpinang, with provincial leaders underscoring its cultural and communal importance. Governor Hidayat Arsani interpreted the tradition as a significant symbol of respect and kinship towards ancestors, parents, and relatives.

Speaking on Sunday, after attending the peak of the tradition in the Kampung Bintang area on Saturday evening, Governor Arsani articulated that Cheng Beng transcends a mere religious or cultural event. He stated it carries the deeper meaning of upholding values of honor, togetherness, and social care inherited from previous generations. He further emphasized that the tradition strengthens family ties, teaching the importance of appreciating history, preserving lineage, and maintaining devotion. “This is our way of remembering the contributions, prayers, and love they have given,” he remarked.

The Cheng Beng Tradition is practiced by Chinese-Indonesian communities, involving the cleaning of ancestral graves up to two weeks before its peak on April 4 or 5. This period sees many relatives, including those from outside the city and internationally, returning to their hometowns to honor and pray for their departed family members. Governor Arsani also commended the community’s dedication to preserving this cultural heritage across generations, adding that the moment aims to unite Bangka Belitung for positive development.

Pangkalpinang Mayor Saparudin highlighted the significant public enthusiasm for the event. He conveyed his aspiration for Sentosa Cemetery, noted as one of the largest Chinese cemeteries in Southeast Asia, to be developed into a prominent tourism destination.

Legislator Rudianto Tjen also contributed to the discourse, emphasizing that celebrations like Cheng Beng serve to fortify social bonds and promote harmony among diverse communities. He affirmed that other religious holidays, such as Maulid Nabi and Isra Mi’raj, would also receive similar governmental attention, ensuring equal consideration for people of different faiths.
